As for the social returns, they include, according to reports, doubling the current per capita share of green spaces in Egypt, which is estimated at 1.2 m 2 / person, in addition to absorbing pollutants and sequestering fumes and dust, which will reflect positively on the public health of citizens.
In terms of environmental returns, the initiative includes reducing greenhouse gas emissions by about 61.2 million tons annually, equivalent to 20% of Egypt’s current total annual emissions, in addition to improving air quality.
Regarding the stages of implementing the initiative, government reports say that it will be implemented over the course of 7 years starting from this year, with 10 million trees in 2022/2023, and 15 million trees during the years 2023/2024, 2024/2025, 2025/2026, and 2026/2027. 2027/2028 and 2028/2029.
Initiative implementation agencies
According to official reports, there are 3 main parties participating in the implementation of the initiative, as the Ministry of Local Development contributes to planting 80 million trees, including 7.7 million trees during the first year.
With regard to the efforts of the Ministry of Environment, it includes contributing to planting 13 million trees, including 1.3 million trees in the first year, while the New Urban Communities Authority contributes to planting 7 million trees, including one million trees in the first year, in addition to other contributions and afforestation projects.
Regarding the efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, 185,000 trees were gifted to the governorates as part of the initiative, coinciding with Egypt’s hosting of the Cop27 climate summit, in addition to planting 300,000 trees in some tree forests and areas surrounding nurseries affiliated with the Ministry of Agriculture, in addition to the Ministry of Transport planting 79.5 thousand trees. In the green belt, and 162.5 thousand trees are being planted on Wadi El-Natrun Road / El Alamein and the Ring Road in Sharm El-Sheikh.
The reports also stated that the scope of implementation of the initiative includes roads and central islands, and the scope of government agencies such as schools, universities, and youth centers, as well as industrial areas and the desert backs of the governorates, in addition to the main, regional and ring roads, and the entrances to cities and villages, main squares and inner islands.

In his report, the Minister of Housing dealt with the measures taken by the ministry through the New Urban Communities Authority, in coordination with the new cities’ agencies, within the framework of implementing the presidential initiative for afforestation “planting 100 million trees.” The current fiscal year has reached about 635,000 trees and palm trees in various new cities nationwide, and the target number is being completed during the current fiscal year, which is estimated at one million trees, which represents the amount of the New Urban Communities Authority’s contribution to implementing the initiative during its first year.
