Minister of Environment: The project of converting waste into electric energy is a pioneering experience for Egypt

Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment, chaired the meeting of the Committee on Procedures for the Implementation of the Solid Waste Transformation Project into Electric Energy in Giza, in the presence of Dr. Tariq El-Araby, Head of the Waste Management Regulatory Authority, and representatives of the Ministries of Local Development, Electricity and Energy, and Giza Governorate.

Dr. Yasmine Fouad confirmed that the project comes within the framework of the state’s endeavor to localize green industries, and implement an integrated program to convert waste into electric energy, including the project for converting waste into electric energy in Abu Rawash, which falls under the golden license projects with investments amounting to $120 million, and contributes to Reducing the amount of waste that is finally disposed of by producing electrical energy suitable for self-use at the station and for connecting to the grid, as it is expected to produce 30 megawatts/hour of electricity.

The minister explained that the implementation of the project will be a pioneering experience for Egypt’s expansion in the field of converting solid waste into electric energy, in order to achieve an economic return from the waste recycling process, and contribute to reducing emissions resulting from waste, which contribute to the severity of global warming, noting that the introduction of a management file Waste on the agenda of the COP27 climate conference, which Egypt recently hosted, was one of the most important gains, as the importance of waste recycling in reducing the effects of climate change was highlighted, and the Waste 50 initiative by 2050 for Africa was launched.

 

The Minister of Environment indicated that the implementation of the project comes within the framework of the protocol signed between the Ministries of Environment and Local Development, the Giza Governorate, and the alliance of the National Authority for Military Production and the Green Tech Company). From all the ministries and concerned authorities headed by a representative of the Ministry of Environment and with membership of representatives from the Ministries of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Local Development, and Military Production), the head of the Electricity Utility and Consumer Protection Regulatory Agency, and the head of the Waste Management Regulatory Authority.

 

During the meeting, the Minister directed the need to reach consensus to expedite the completion of the contracting phase to start the actual implementation phases, where a feasibility study for the project was conducted, an environmental impact assessment study and environmental approval issuance, preparation of the initial design of the station and analysis of waste samples in the vicinity of the site.
