Mahmoud Mohieldin: The Climate Conference in Sharm El-Sheikh achieved great successes, despite the difficult challenges

Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin, the climate pioneer for the Egyptian presidency of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (COP27) and the United Nations Special Envoy for Financing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, confirmed that the Sharm El-Sheikh climate conference achieved great successes despite the ongoing crisis and the difficult economic and geopolitical challenges the world is witnessing.

This came during his participation today in a session on the results of the Climate Conference in Sharm El-Sheikh COP27 organized by the Egyptian Embassy in Addis Ababa and the Egyptian Permanent Mission to the African Union in cooperation with the African Union Commission, with the participation of Ambassador Mohamed Gad, Ambassador of Egypt to Ethiopia and the African Union, and Ambassador Mohamed Nasr, Director of the Department. Climate Change, Environment and Sustainable Development at the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Egypt’s chief negotiator at COP27, Josepha Sacco, African Union Commissioner on Environment and Climate Change Issues, Ephraim Chitima, Chair of the African Negotiators Group at the Climate Summit, and Parfait Onanga Anyanga, Director of the United Nations Office to the African Union .

Mohieldin said that the success of the conference began with the launch of pioneering initiatives to enhance the local and regional dimensions of climate action to serve the international effort in this regard, explaining that the conference achieved great progress in some areas of climate action, and achieved satisfactory progress in other areas, as well as maintaining the objectives of the Paris Agreement related to By reducing emissions, which was confirmed during the climate conference in Glasgow, despite the challenges facing achieving these goals.

Mohieldin explained that the Sharm El-Sheikh conference made great progress by launching the Loss and Damage Fund, whose mechanisms will be agreed upon by the twenty-eighth Conference of the Parties in the United Arab Emirates at the end of this year. The conference also witnessed the agreement of the parties on the need to find innovative mechanisms for financing climate action to reduce dependence on debt. With the need to restructure the global financing system to allow fair, adequate and effective financing for various aspects of climate action in different countries and societies.

With regard to the positive results, Mohieldin said that the Sharm El-Sheikh conference witnessed the launch of the Sharm El-Sheikh Adaptation Agenda, which lays out a clear vision for the areas of work related to adaptation and its financing mechanisms in the sectors of food and agriculture, water and nature, coasts and oceans, human settlements, and infrastructure, explaining that the agenda highlighted the importance of measures Adapting to climate change for African countries in particular and developing countries in general, as well as emphasizing the importance of a comprehensive approach in dealing with all dimensions of climate action and placing them within the framework of achieving the goals of sustainable development as a whole.

Raed Al-Manakh stated that the Sharm El-Sheikh conference witnessed unprecedented participation of youth and children, and the appointment of a youth envoy by the Egyptian presidency of the conference for the first time. , which resulted in a large number of projects that can be invested, financed and implemented, with discussion of the possibility of some of these projects benefiting from the financing provided by the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero Emissions (GFANZ).
