A European court reprimands Spain for “air pollution”: 9,000 premature deaths

The European Court of Justice issued a judgment reprimanding Spain for not cleaning up the polluted air in the capital, Madrid, as well as in parts of Barcelona.

And the European Court indicated that Spain did not take the necessary measures in a timely manner to avoid the limit of nitrogen dioxide, according to the American “Bloomberg” agency.

The European Commission filed a lawsuit against Spain in 2020 before the highest European court, asserting that the government had violated the bloc’s rules by constantly breaching legal limits for nitrogen dioxide in urban areas of Madrid, Barcelona and other cities.

The European Commission drew on data from the European Environment Agency, which revealed that there are around 9,000 premature deaths in Spain annually due to nitrogen dioxide.
