Tokyo is passing a law requiring solar panels to be installed in all new homes

All homes in the Japanese capital will have to install solar panels on new buildings and homes, starting in April 2025, after the Tokyo Legislative Council enacted a local law requiring citizens to follow this trend.

On Thursday, members of the Council called on 50 construction companies to equip homes of up to 2,000 square meters with renewable energy sources. According to the legislation issued, these major companies must submit annual reports confirming their compliance with the law.

The city’s advisors considered that this step allows the city to move towards green energy.
Installing the 4-kilowatt panels will cost about 980,000 yen (6,725 euros), but the government believes that this amount will be covered by revenue from electricity sales within 10 years.

Companies are also required to report the amount of energy generated by the solar panels.

Through this approach, Tokyo hopes to significantly reduce its emissions in the coming decades.

It seeks to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared to 2000 levels, and to be emissions-free by 2050.
