Tropical storm kills 30 people in Madagascar and displaces thousands

Tropical Storm Chineso killed 30 people in Madagascar, authorities said, leaving 20 missing and displacing thousands.

Chinsu, which made landfall on January 19, was the first tropical storm to hit Madagascar this year. The island country in the Indian Ocean is usually hit by a series of such storms every year.

Nearly 37,000 people have been displaced by the storm, which triggered floods and landslides, the government’s Office of Risk and Disaster Management said in a report released late Monday.

The government last week announced the death toll at 16.

At least 138 people were killed and about 130,000 homeless in January and February of last year after four major storms hit Madagascar.
