The Minister of Environment and the Governor of South Sinai discuss the latest developments in the waste management system in Sharm El-Sheikh

Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment, and Major General Khaled Fouda, Governor of South Sinai, met to discuss the latest developments in the implementation of the new waste management system in the city of Sharm El-Sheikh, where the minister praised the efforts of all workers in the governorate, led by Major General Khaled Fouda, in preparing the climate and overcoming obstacles to hosting the conference. Climate COP 27, and work to make it a success in order to present an honorable image of Egypt.

 

During the meeting, the Minister of Environment reviewed the current position for implementing the contract of the Bee’ah and Green Planet companies’ alliance concerned with implementing the waste management system in Sharm El-Sheikh, which takes place in two phases, namely the preparatory phase, and included the provision of equipment and contribution to the implementation of the waste management system of the COP 27 climate conference, which It witnessed great success and praise, and the operational phase of the system, which begins at the end of next March, during which the agreed-upon service will be provided in full.

The minister pointed out the need to expedite the development of a mechanism to ensure the effectiveness and sustainability of the system, explaining that a matrix has been prepared in cooperation between the Ministries of Environment and Local Development that organizes the form of that mechanism to be presented to the Supreme Committee for Tourism, within the framework of the Ministry of Environment’s planning, regulatory and supervisory role in the new waste management system, and Article 34 From the Waste Management and Regulation Law No. 202 of 2020.
The Minister of Environment also indicated the importance of reaching sustainable mechanisms to benefit from the green zone that was implemented for the COP 27 climate conference, in order to achieve an environmental, economic and societal return for the governorate under the umbrella of achieving sustainability, pointing to the need to involve the local Bedouin population in this dimension, especially in the implementation of a management system hangover.

For his part, Major General Khaled Fouda expressed his happiness at the success of the COP 27 Climate Conference, describing it as an epic work, in which all efforts joined hands under the leadership of His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Republic, to present an honorable model, pointing out the importance of ensuring the effectiveness and sustainability of the new waste management system for the city of Sharm. Sheikh to preserve its civilized appearance, and the role of collecting cleaning fees in achieving its effectiveness and sustainability, as the governorate is currently finalizing the strategy on which the fees will be collected, and the governorate is also keen to cooperate with the Bee’ah and Green Planet alliances responsible for implementing the system and encouraging community participation.
